Why coastal Colorbond ages faster than inland Colorbond

Salt spray is the main enemy. In the Illawarra, homes within 1–3km of the water get continuous salt deposition, especially on windward elevations. That salt attacks:

Screw heads and neoprene washers at every fixing point.
Overlap edges between adjacent sheets where salt lodges and traps moisture.
Cut edges around penetrations (vents, aircon flues, satellite mounts).
Flashings, ridges and valleys — anywhere metal is folded or joined.

The Willows Roofing Colorbond restoration process

Every proper Colorbond restoration follows the same core sequence. Skip any step and the finished roof looks OK for a year and then fails.

Step 1 — inspection and quote. We walk the roof, photograph every issue, note damaged sheets and failed sealant, and hand you a written itemised quote covering every step below. No surprises later.

Step 2 — high-pressure wash. The whole roof gets pressure-washed to remove salt residue, dirt, lichen, and any loose failed paint. Skipping this step is the single most common corner-cut in cheap quotes — coatings won't adhere to a dirty roof.

Step 3 — rust treatment. Every rust spot gets wire-brushed back to sound metal, then treated with a rust-converting primer that chemically stops the corrosion. Perforated sheets are patched or replaced at this stage.

Step 4 — screw and sealant replacement. We replace failed screws with new sealed neoprene-washer fasteners, and strip and re-run all failed sealant at flashings, overlaps and penetrations. This is the single biggest step for stopping future leaks.

Step 5 — primer coat. A full metal-adhesion primer coat goes on across the whole roof. This is what makes the top-coat actually bond to the metal.

Step 6 — top coats. Two coats of high-build, UV-stable industrial membrane in your chosen colour, applied by airless spray for even coverage. Total dry film thickness is significantly greater than a single-coat "quick recoat" job.

Step 7 — clean-down and sign-off. Full site clean, we walk the finished job with you, hand over warranty paperwork.
